Making the Move to a Big Kid Bed: What You Actually Need
Saying goodbye to the crib? Big step! Here’s what will really help make your toddler’s new sleep space comfy, safe, and something they’ll want to stay in all night (fingers crossed).
1st things first.
Before you change anything, talk it through with your toddler. Help them understand the new setup and give them little tasks they can do themselves at bedtime. Set clear, kind rules around staying in their bed. This will help cut down those 3 a.m. hallway visits!
1. Bed bumpers
Skip the rails—go for under-the-sheet bed bumpers. They’re soft, stay in place, and this tall version keeps even the wiggliest toddlers from rolling out. (Been there, don’t want to go back!)
2. Cozy bedding
Make their bed feel like a little nest. Tuck in the sides of the blanket like a sleeping bag—it helps them feel secure (and stay put). I love this soft duvet insert: not too warm, not too cool. You can add a fun cover with their favorite characters (hi, Bluey).
3. Clock
Now that they can get out of bed, you need a toddler clock. I like this one with a countdown so they can see how long until morning. The Hatch is great too—anything that clearly says “it’s still night” or “okay to get up.”
4. Light
Toddlers love independence. Let them safely handle things like finding a stuffed animal or going potty at night. I stick a simple light switch with velcro near the bed. It connects to a lamp with a red lightbulb (red light is sleep-friendly). They can turn it on and off without needing you.
5. Door Silencer
Whether you’re making trips into their room—or they’re coming out—the door latch noise can wake the whole house. That’s where this padded door silencer comes in. It’s a soft cover that fits over the latch, muffling slams and preventing accidental locks—perfect for toddler safety and sleepy parents! It’s made from sturdy 100% polyester, stays in place easily, and comes in a handy 3-pack.
You’ve got this!
Transitions can be tough, but with the right setup and some toddler teamwork, this one can go smoothly. Want more help? My toddler sleep course walks you through the whole thing, step-by-step and tantrum-free.
